The project’s primary objective has been to reduce the risk to production, posed by obsolescence and failure of 29 x Tricon shutdown safety systems and associated equipment. It is achieving this by upgrading the central parts, field power supplies, barriers, I/O modules and converting the application software to the latest version. This will provide the longest system life to the next upgrade. The implementation is undertaken with minimal disruption to plant production and normal operations, taking advantage of process plant shutdowns scheduled where possible. Resolving existing obsolescence in the Tricons is in line with the clients objective of not running any obsolete equipment on the site. Underlying these two objectives is the requirement to maintain the technical integrity of the systems, the functions they perform and their associated documentation.
