Upgrading a Safety Instrumented System

A major client is planning to replace the Emergency Shutdown and Fire & Gas Systems on an FPSO, and has engaged I&E Systems to help define the project.

The FPSO (floating production storage and offloading) vessel produces oil off the Western Australian coast. The FPSO will be brought into dry dock in 2013. The client aims to replace the existing ABB safety-related systems with Invensys Triconex Tricons at that time. That work will involve the migration of close to 2000 existing inputs and outputs relating to emergency shutdown, process shutdown and fire & gas. After migration, the client will enjoy the benefits of an upgraded system that is fully compliant with the current AS IEC 61511 functional safety standard.

With a short timeframe to prepare for this work, the client has turned to I&E Systems to determine the scope, materials, costing and schedule for the implementation of the Tricon systems. I&E Systems can provide up-to-date expertise gained from executing similar work for the same client.

I&E Systems’ focus in the Definition Phase of this project is on the Tricon hardware and cabinets, software safety requirements, system design specification, testing and validation. As other parties are involved with the safety requirements specification and field equipment, I&E Systems can capitalize on its TÜV-accredited Functional Safety framework for SIS integration, to help the client plan for a safe and reliable outcome.
